THE SOUNDBOARD: Concerts for the Week of 5/11

It’s time you had a nice night out on the town. I know times are tough and we’re all looking to save money, so why not a nice little art walk/concert combination that will cost you a total of $5?

PICK OF THE WEEK
edsharpeThursday is the Downtown Art Walk. Feel free to head over to the city around noon to check out some cool galleries around the city. Then, around 8:00PM, it’s time for the final night of Edward Sharpe’s residency at the Regent Theater. A ten-piece band led by Ima Robot’s frontman Alex Ebert, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros brings you all the fun of the 1960s, without that whole issue of, you know, having to be alive during the decade. You’ll get long hair, robes, face paint, the whole deal. This is a band that’s already creating some buzz and will definitely be ones to watch in the coming year.

Also playing are thenewno2, a band I unfortunately missed at Coachella. This is Dhani Harrison’s band. Yep, that’s George Harrison’s son. Essentially an electro/alt/pop band, the band isn’t the most unique thing you’re gonna hear, but hey..you’re gonna see the spitting image of a Beatle live on stage. That’s pretty cool in itself.

Third on the bill for an awesome show are We Are The World. I haven’t seen these guys live, so I don’t really know what to say, so I’ll let Pitchfork do the talking for me. A quote from their Best of 08: “It is like mega-high energy dance music with an amazing visual and performative live show. That is actually a terribly weak description. Sorry. I am speechless. Just go see them live. Someone needs to give these people a huge grant.”
Wow.

Last to talk about (and first to play) are amnion, a fun local indie rock band that will definitely start the night off on a high note. So for $5 (or free if you create a profile at this site and bring printout proof with you), you can spend your whole Thursday in Downtown, surrounded by more art and culture than you’ll need for, well, at least another month. Remember, it’s gonna be busy cause of the Art Walk, so keep that in mind.
