THE SOUNDBOARD: Concerts for the Week of 1/25
Let me apologize in advance. The pick of the week is definitely going to be a good one, but a lot of the writing will be recycled from when this band came to town last August. My brain is still recovering from the Radiohead show last night.
Last August I wandered into the echo to watch a little band known as Bowerbirds, with opening act Megafaun. Well unfortunately Megafaun isn’t returning, but Bowerbirds are back on Saturday the 30th. Based on the experience I had at that last show, I can vouch for their live set. It sounds clean, it’s got that relaxing nature that the folky genre brings with a loud, powerful kick that keeps you on your toes.
Now comes a paragraph from the last time I wrote about these guys.
I feel like it mainly consists of acoustically driven sounds, with some soft drums, a couple guitars, violin, maybe an occasional woodwind or two. At least that’s what the band I am here to talk about sounds like. And that band would be Bowerbirds. Consisting of a couple from North Carolina, the band recorded a wonderful debut album in Hymns for a Dark Horse, with upbeat folky/gypsy music sounding songs, all while building a cabin in the woods. They’ve come back with a second album, Upper Air, that is more basic in sound, but a lot more “grown up”, for lack of a better term. Lyrically advanced, with words and phrases you’d expect to hear in between Andrew Bird’s eerie whistles, their sophomore LP is the perfect follow up.
Ok that was it. Not too painful right? Good. This time around, they’ll be playing with Julie Doiron, a Canadian singer-songwriter with a more traditional folky/indie rock sound. She’s great and should not be missed, so make sure to go early enough to catch her.
