THE SOUNDBOARD: Concerts for the Week of 01/25
After the amazingly horrific Animal Collective concert cancellation fiasco of this past weekend, there are still few shows to look forward to as January comes to a close.
While Animal Collective may have hurt your feelings by not performing, you can catch Avey Tare’s sister, Abby Portner, doing a free show of her solo work, Drawlings on Tuesday night. If experimental music isn’t your bag, but free shows are, Franz Ferdinand plays at Amoeba on Friday evening; get there early for a good spot.
PICK OF THE WEEK
It would be blasphemous to not feature musical genius Brian Wilson as the must-see Los Angeles show this week. (Sorry Katy Perry. Maybe next time…But that’s a big ‘maybe.’) Known primarily for his work with the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson changed the very definition and conventions of pop music through a little reverb, beautiful harmonies, and lush soundscapes.
Wilson plays Wednesday at the Wiltern in support of his newest album, That Lucky Old Sun, but expect some Beach Boys standards from the Pet Sounds era, as well as some tracks off the recently finished Beach Boy’s opus, Smile.
OTHER SHOWS TO LOOK OUT FOR THIS WEEK:
01/27/09 Drawlings w/ Infinite Body at Family on Fairfax (FREE)
01/30/08 Adele at the Wiltern
01/30/08 Franz Ferdinand at Amoeba (FREE)
01/31/09 Katy Perry at the Wiltern
