The Art of Bookbinding & A Marching Band

book-binderRandom enough for you? Machine Project sure knows how to tie things together with absolutely no connection. One can never guess what is up next for this collective– it highlights people from all artistic endeavors, so artistic that you didn’t even know it was art! This Sunday begins at 2pm with Kristen St. John who works at the UCLA Library. She will show you different types of book structures and asks that you bring your own attempts at this art form. And yes, people still make books by hand. Crazy but true. From Machine Project, “The materials and methods used to bind books are simple, but deciding how to apply them determines more than the appearance of a book. A bookbinder’s decisions directly influence a reader’s experience of a text. Paper type, sewing technique, spine lining – all these elements affect the way a book opens, flows, balks, or shifts in a reader’s hands.” Then at 8pm that night, join the Killsonic Women’s Choir and Amplified Percussion Ensemble in an ear-splitting performance involving found objects, amps, vocalists of all languages, and pretty much madness. It will be loud, and it will be quite the experience.
