Sweet Streets: Vermont Ave.
What an adorably sweet street Vermont Ave. in Los Feliz is. It’s got all the fixings for a lovely day frolicking around sipping tea, being vegetarian, dressing stylishly, and drinking into the night. All in just four blocks of awesomeness.
Heading down Vermont from Franklin, let’s start with Psychobabble, the fabulous little coffee shop that is right out of a bad 90’s teen flick. It’s like Rachel Leigh Cook’s character from She’s All That (pre-prom makeover) will walk in any second. It’s not chic, it’s not even all that inviting, but it’s got a great name and it isn’t Starbucks. Sometimes it’s hard to find a little local cafe to hang out in, and if you’re in the Los Feliz area, this is your best bet. Or you could hop across the street for some pretty gross coffee matched with a delicious slice of homemade pie from the House of Pies that is sure to cheer you up when you’re down! Just a few doors down you’ll find yourself face-to-face with an outrageously colorful window display for Pop Killer Dept. It’s the newer location of the Little Tokyo store, and it’s just as magical. There are second-hand clothes for sale as well as the store’s own line with weird t-shirts and accessories. You can also find vintage Japanese memorabilia and other random ass things like Pepsi cans for hiding drugs. This place will definitely keep you busy.
One of the most popular stops on this street for the 20-something, vegetarian crowd has got to be Fred 62. This futuristic diner-themed spot is open all night, gets crowded on the weekends, and offers a big menu filled with things for all sorts of people whether you’re a carnivore or herbivore, dieting or ready to stuff your face with burgers and shakes. They also offer some Asian noodle dishes, breakfast items, and huge desserts. It’s not every day you can get soba noodles with a waffle sundae and macaroni and cheese, right? Oh yeah, and all their items have super cheesy hilarious names like Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love, Hotter Than Hell Penne, Lettuce Entertain You, and plenty more where those came from.
On the next block you will find the Los Feliz Theatre and Skylight Books. The theater, I should warn you, is tiny. Three screens and not a place you want to see Avatar at. As long as you get there early enough to guarantee yourself a good spot inside, then you’ll be fine, but just be prepared. Other than that it’s adorable and even has a little ticket booth out front. Skylight Books is another story. This is really a wonderful independent book store which we have written up before since they host great events all the time. Once you walk inside, it’s hard to leave. They’ve got a huge selection of books, and I especially enjoy their greeting card selection and notebooks for sale. Check out their website for their schedule of upcoming readings and happenings.
Finally we end with alcohol, ice cream, and picnics. The Dresden Room (previously seen in Bored & Thirsty) is a gritty old-Hollywood style bar. It may not have the expected class, but the employees wear vests and you can order a tasty cocktails inside of an old building with history. The drinks you must order are the Blood & Sand (an updated version of a Margarita), and the always enjoyable Martinis and Manhattans. If you aren’t in the mood to get a bit tipsy at The Dresden, walk across the street to Rite Aid. Stop right there, I know you think I’m crazy. I’m not. Have you ever tried Rite Aid ice cream? (previously known as Thrifty’s?), holy mother of god. It’s so good…. so cheap… where have you been??? Go now. Stop reading this post! Unless you already have… Let’s finish this off: Barnsdall Park. You know it well if you’ve been reading our site for a while. Ok, so it’s technically in my Hollywood Blvd. post, but whatever. It’s RIGHT there. So take your Rite Aid ice cream (mint chip, rainbow sherbet, cookies and cream) and relax on the shady grass around the Hollyhock House while overlooking all of Hollywood.
So, in conclusion, Vermont Ave. is obviously, with out a doubt, a very sweet street!
