LA Blink

Stuffed animal claw game at the corner store on Union & 23rd.  With money strapped to the plushies.  Just think… you could keep playing FOR EVER.

LA Blink

Many of us have seen videos of the fabled hydrant geyser, but to see it in person is a schadenfreude delight.  Taken last week, this burst of our city’s precious liquid gold is the result of a rental truck hit & run.  Check out the scale of how big it is by the legs of the nearby firefighter on the left.

LA App: Wolfgang’s Vault

Wolfgang's Vault

Welcome to a rainy-day edition of LA Apps. On the days when you’re stuck indoors by weather mandate or by preference, Wolfgang’s Vault is your umbrella, your warm blanket, and your grilled cheese sandwich all rolled into one lusciously audible package. The goodness inside is an incredible list of vaulted concerts and musician interviews that are absolutely free to watch or listen to.

You can search by artist, venue, city, or even by date/era. Concerts are available dating all the way back to the ’60s and cataloged up to modern days, allowing you to experience legendary shows of the past and present. The ever-expanding list of concerts includes sessions from Los Angeles and Hollywood mainstay venues like the Palladium, the Roxy, the Forum, the Troubador, and the Hollywood Bowl.

The only thing you have to do is sign up for free with your email and a password. No strings attached. Many of the concerts are downloadable for free. Some of them you have to pay a small fee (usually around $5-10) for the download, but listening and watching through the website is always free. You also have the option to have it as an iPhone app. So go ahead and venture to rock from the comfort of your keyboard.

Think of it this way… economy’s down.  Concert prices are the same.  Now you get to see some top-notch shows for the cost of an internet connection, which you clearly already have.

Thanksgiving Adventures of Nook and Cranny

Nook and Cranny think that because of their GI Joe camouflage pattern that they can hide from Pacha the Beast Cat in the newly fallen leaves, but alas, they fail. Little do they know that Pacha is stuffing his face with the frozen raw turkey for tomorrow, and couldn’t care less about the little reptiles. Hopefully no hungry hawks fly by while they sit outside “camouflaged”.

hungry hungry hippos (and by hippos I mean turtles)

One of the most noticeable attributes that Nook and Cranny have inherited from their parents (especially Cranny) is their shockingly large appetites. Because of their appreciation for good food they are always looking for new and exciting places to dine. These cuddly little critters are finding their way around the city, making their mark (literally) wherever they go. Today they stumbled upon a very friendly little cafe and bakery in Silver Lake called Town and Country and left behind a nice little present (no, not poop)You might think it would be impossible for two small turtles with no opposable thumbs to hold a piece of chalk and create this masterpiece, but the truth is… these are no ordinary turtles.

Turtle (& Cat) Adventures!

It has been a calm week for the trio, taking a stroll through the park on Sunday. Nook and Cranny are still starving, their portions have been decreased to one turtle-food pellet a week, due to the costs of the new feline beast. The beast keeps growing, surpassing even Cranny’s growth rate. Nook is still a tiny, juvenile, boring creature, while Cranny and the beast begin to befriend each other, sharing their intellectual thoughts over their versions of wine (milk) and cheese (bologna). (They might be planning an escape together, since they have now seen the outside world beyond the tiny and dark apartment, who can tell? Their intelligence is beyond any of us humans).

Animal Adventures

So it looks like there is a new family member here at Bored.LA. It was a somewhat unexpected one, but certainly not unwanted. Nook and Cranny finally arrived home from their pumpkin patch adventure, only this time they didn’t come back alone (those little slutties). Here’s what we found on our doorstep:
Apparently they took a wrong turn around 3rd St. and ran into what legends have referred to as the “crazy eyed killa.” But since Nook and Cranny laugh (or the turtle equivalent of slowly blinking) in the face of danger, they feared not and instead used all their skill and knowledge to try and tame the beast. In the end they were victorious and got to kitty-back-ride the rest of the way home. The next day however, both turtles woke up hungry and neglected, with the same thought… “I’ve made a huge mistake.”

More Turtle Adventures!

In order to start preparing for their favorite holiday ever, Nook and Cranny ventured into the dangerous Pumpkin Patch territory to pick the perfect pumpkin plus a patch of pickled peppers. After a heated argument of what came first, the chicken or the egg? they chose a nice plump pumpkin, strapped it up, and began the long journey home. It has been 6 days, so we expect them home any day now.

Stepping it up a notch this week, Nook and Cranny took their competition to new heights… specifically, to the Matterhorn. A trip to Switzerland might have been fun, but lets face it Disneyland has funnel cakes, so the choice was clear.
I don’t want to brag or anything, but Nook is a speedy little climber -while Cranny on the other hand might need to lose a few fractions of an ounce if he plans on keeping up on future adventures. Just a suggestion.

The Adventures of Nook & Cranny

Although a race between baby Nook and the beastly Cranny may hardly seem fair, they insisted and so we obliged. Here you can see poor little Nook being distracted by the bright red shoes (a clever trick devised my Cranny’s mother to lure Nook’s concentration away from the task at hand) while Cranny races to the finish line. In a recent comment from Nook he stated “…” calling for a long overdue rematch. Will Cranny except the challenge? Stay tuned for more Adventures of Nook & Cranny!
