Mobile Dance-Club Party, Part 2

blurry mannsTwo years ago, a gang of spirited young hooligans armed with MP3 players invaded Mann’s Chinese Theater to hold a very public dance-party. The invasion started quietly, done in plain sight, everyone simply mingling and pretending to examine celebrity handprints outside… until 10:07 PM, when everyone busted out earphones like gunslingers in a Robert Rodriguez movie and danced their ass off to whatever was on their Ipod — a silent, joyous collision between flash-mob and discotheque. There was also a conga-line at one point.

Tourists were mystified. Employees were stymied. Security was unable to stop laughing, even as they escorted us out. Undeterred, the party continued, West Side Story-style, down to Hollywood and Highland, where street performers, celebrity impersonators, and random passerby joined in on the festivities. (A guest appearance was made by several stone-faced, video-camera-brandishing members of the LAPD.) Footage of all this epic-ness is available right here.

Anyway — this year, rather than hold our party at some Hollywood tourist trap, we’re instead going for a prized LA institution, something this city holds near and dear, a place where regular folks go to peacefully shop, dine and take trolley-rides. That’s right, kids: we’re gonna storm The Grove.

Meet-up point is in front of Pacific 14 Movie Theater, by the fountains. Get there by 10 PM. Come ready to boogie in public (do what you need to do here, guys.) Mingle, act normal, do not attract attention from civilians. Headphones go in at exactly 10:07 PM, and then we dance like lunatics until security shows us out, at which point we respectfully go find a new “dance floor” elsewhere and repeat.  Afterparty at The Kibitz Room bar at Canter’s.

RSVP on Facebook here.

Mass Uprising

You havcritical massen’t really lived until you’ve gone flying down Wilshire Blvd on a bicycle at 10 o’clock at night surrounded by a speeding mob of 300 hundred other cyclists — and this Friday, you have the opportunity to do just that. Critical Mass is world-wide celebration of bike culture, happening once a month in different cities all around the globe, wherein hordes of pedal-enthusiasts take to the night-time streets and let their freak flags fly. The event’s moniker comes from a phenomenon in which traffic is compelled to a stand-still once a high enough number of bikes take over the road. (This doesn’t, however, give you license to be a dick to passing motorists and/or the cops — this means you, idiot from last month who wowed the world with his creativity by yelling “I smell bacon” at the LAPD.  Guys like you make me wish Daryl Gates was still alive.)

The ride starts at 7:30 PM sharp, at the Western/Wilshire metro station. Bring your wheels, helmet, an extra tube, water, and learn the call-outs.  And most importantly, bring front and rear lights — crucial for obvious safety reasons, as well as being part of the magical visual effect you get when you crest a hill and look down upon a moving river of blinking red luminescence. For the three hours of contained anarchy that go along with CM taking to the streets, there’s no better way to spend a Friday night.

For more information, check out their Facebook page.

World Pillow Fight Day 2010

one of our ownAnother year, another pillow fight day. Across the globe, cities are hosting massive fights and LA is no exception. With almost 4,000 attending on the Facebook event page, this should be the biggest one yet! Saturday, April 3rd, bring your pillow to Pershing Square by 3pm and prepare to fight! Invite everyone you know to make this year bigger and better than ever. Note: if you’re allergic to down– you may have some issues. There will be feathers everywhere, people dressed in ridiculous outfits, cameras to avoid, and possibly cops laughing in the distance (at least they have in the past). We will be there, so see you next Saturday! (If you are in a different city next weekend, no worries— dozens of cities are participating!!!)

Shaun of the Dead Zombie Walk

lSaturday the 15th Yelp LA is attempting to make the biggest zombie walk ever. The Seattle zombie walk drew a record number of people all zombied out with blood and gore- 3848 to be exact- but it is believed that there were almost twice as many zombies roving the streets before an outdoor screening of Shaun of the Dead. Come on LA, we can do better than that. It’s $10 to get into the circuit city parking lot in silver lake where they will screen the movie, and there will be an Undead fashion show, XBOX giveaway, Zombie sketch comedy, face painting, photo boothing, and a zombie-riffic DJ. You best get your zombie makeup and represent.

World Pillow Fight Day

2389511990_c67d52c70b_mMake sure your pillow is nice and fluffy for World Pillow Fight Day on April 4th at 3pm. Join pillow fighters all over the globe, from London to Lisbon, for a flash mob event. The website currently says to “gather near the big purple tower,” but I would check back to make sure. The whole thing seems a little unofficial, at least on LA’s side, so I’d check out the international pillow fight day website. Gather your friends, have fun, and play nice!

It’s a Good Saturday for a Massive Protest

anti-war-march-21This Saturday there will be a self-declared mass protest to stop the wars and occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.  The march is an opportunity to confront the new administration with the continued hope of people for action in regards to military spending, war, and the subsequent, though currently more talked-about, job, die-ineducation, and infrastructure disintegration on the home front.
A.N.S.W.E.R. LA (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) is organizing the event.  There will be speakers, musicians, and spoken word.  The march will be led by coffins covered with flags of the countries that the US currently occupies.  When the march reaches Hollywood and Highland, veterans, students, and young children will flashmob a “die-in” where they will lie down in the street in order to represent the death and destruction overseas.  There is a whole itinerary of planned symbolic actions like this  that you can participate in and read about on the ANSWER LA website.

Pantsless Metro Riding!

Improv Everywhere has hosted an annual no-pants subway ride in New York, and now this tradition is coming to LA! On the afternoon of January 10th, feel free to ride the metro in your skivvies, but be warned, you might get a citation. This makes it all the more fun though (as long as you’re not being disruptive or showing off your private parts you should be alright). Join the facebook group, and have fun! Oh, and wear leg warmers or something so you don’t freeze your ass off, literally.

Protest Prop 8 Flash Mob Style

Can’t believe Prop 8 passed? Want to do something about it? Stand in solidarity against Prop 8 ( and in very close proximity to your fellow protesters) at a No On Prop 8 Flash Mob at the University of Southern California tomorrow. At precisely 12:25 tomorrow afternoon political flash-mobbers will gather at Tommy Trojan, right smack in the center of campus (the corner of Trousdale Parkway & Childs Way), and kiss and/or hug a fellow protester for exactly one minute to illustrate the importance of equal choice. The event, hosted by USC students, is intended as a powerful statement against the proposition that passed last week. So grab a partner, guy or gal and don’t be shy (or late, cause you’ll miss it) and ‘Fight On!’ for equality!

Cool Party!

Some people got together and decided they wanted to make their own version of an Improv Everywhere event. Today at 5:00 p.m. exactly, over 1500 will gather at the Hollywood and Highland center courtyard to be a part of The Great Los Angeles Freeze. For five minutes, everyone will freeze in their position. Then at the sound of a horn or other loud device, everyone will start moving again like nothing happened. Bring as many people as you can to make this a success. There was a freeze recently done by GueriLA, the west coast branch of Improv Everywhere, in Santa Monica, check out the video here. They only had around 100 people, and look at the effect it had. It’s free and fun and can really be quite funny to watch others’ reactions. Here’s is the official Facebook group, and you can e-mail the organizers here.

The Dead Love to Rock

The Key Club hosts tonight’s Living Dead Fest, a musical event dedicated to, well, the living dead. Acts include Rezurex, The White Coffin Terror, The Triggers, Order of the Fly, More than Never, and The Astro Zombies from Spain. The real treat about tonight isn’t necessarily the concert, but the pre-concert. All us “mortals” aren’t invited in until the dead arrive. That’s right. A zombie walk will be taking place, starting at 5:30PM. “The Living” will be waiting outside the concert while the zombies come to “devour” them. Sound strange?

Zombie walks are actually pretty fun, it’s worth a trip to catch the costumes and acting. Or join in. Meet outside the Key Club at 4:30-5PM. If you don’t have your own makeup, an artist will be on hand. I assume from that point the group will walk around Sunset Blvd., causing a stir, and then heading back to the Key Club.

Other fun events tonight: a zombie makeover booth, First Annual Zombie Queen contest, coffin case fashion show, and a bunch of vendors selling appropriately themed merchandise.

Tickets for the show are $15, to dress like a zombie and walk around L.A., free!

Mobile Clubbing Tonight!

A reminder for everyone: Mobile Clubbing is happening tonight with a venue change. Instead of being on Hollywood and Highland at the Metro Station, it is now down the street in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Bring your ipod/zune/discman and headphones and at 10PM sharp, start playing your music and dancing until you can’t dance anymore. A quick suggestion for your playlist tonight: Mandotek- Alive. Pretty much the best song & dance out right now. Here is an example of what I’m talking about…

Oh and don’t forget about tomorrow’s Pillow Fight at Pershing Square now @ 3:00PM sharp! Another site dedicated to the event is found here. It says that there is an Easter egg hunt going on at the same time but that it won’t interfere with our event. That means though to tell everyone not to disrupt the people participating in the egg hunt and not to steal eggs from them either!! (Thanks Paynie) So far over 1,000 have officially RSVPed. It’s going to be insane. Tell everyone and I’ll see you tonight or tomorrow!!!

(Sorry for the week long break in posts– Spring break!)

Keep It Coming

Not only is L.A. participating in World Pillow Fight Day, but now an unofficial mobile-clubbing event, hosted by Ian Shorr, is taking place Friday March 21st inside the Metro Station @ Hollywood and Highland.

Here’s what you do:

Step 1: Everyone bring their Ipod, MP3 player, Discman, Walkman, whatever — as long as it’s portable, plays music, and has earphones.

Step 2: Meet at the entrance to the subway station on Hollywood and Highland at 10 PM. Come “prepared” to boogie down in public. (Do what you need to do here, people…)

Step 3: All at once, we put on our headphones, invade the subway station, and dance our asses off to whatever music is on each of our Ipods.

Step 4: Take party onto train, ride to next station, repeat process. Ride back at Hollywood and Highland before Metro closes (or security has word with us.)

Once again, the more people, the better! See you there!
