Barefoot In The Sand
The Twilight Dance Series at the Santa Monica Pier is the most fun you will ever have ignoring a band. This is not to say that the bands aren’t worth your attention (track down Kokono #1, a Congolose dance-trance outfit that rocked the stage earlier this month.) But they’re up on the pier, and the real action is down in the sand…
As the sun sinks, the beach becomes checkerboarded with picnic blankets as revelers stake their claims. Sangria gets sipped from plastic cups; tendrils of sweet smoke drift past, hinting that your neighbors may be engaging in the deplorable practice of smoking marijuana; laughter flows. Unlike the Hollywood Bowl, where the sound-system overpowers conversation and the rows of seats provide a semblance of privacy, the Twilight series seems almost designed to help you meet the people around you. Pretty soon, you’re surrounded by no-longer-strangers and doing the merrily unsteady barefoot-in-the-sand dance.
This Thursday, they’ll be featuring Kailash Kher, an Indian pop-folk singer who fills stadiums back on his native subcontinent despite vaguely resembling the little brother in Spy Kids. It’s spacey, kick-off-your-shoes music, a nice fit for a setting lit by the lights of a ferris wheel. Get there early, the beach fills up quick.

A Movie-able Feast
Recently, some alt
ruistic genius sat down and thought to himself: “What are the things that Angelenos love above all else? What common ground do we share in this sprawling multicultural metropolis of ours?”
Hmmm. Hauling ass in our cars around Dash buses that are going 11 mph and taking up two lanes? Sure, we all dig that. Burning shit down whenever the Lakers win/lose? That’s something we can get behind. Rooting for each other’s failure? Yes, but mostly in Hollywood. Bitching about the lack of carpool lanes on the 405 like a fat guy who thinks that buying bigger pants is the answer? Hallelujah, we are one. But those are all surface traits. If you really want to dig deep into what unspoken bonds unite as brothers and sisters in the City of Angels… then I have four words for you.
Outdoor movies. Food trucks.
And starting this weekend, the good people at the Outdoor Cinema Foodfest will bring those two timeless LA infatuations together. All summer long, they’ll be screening classics like The Big Lebowski, The Breakfast Club, Pulp Fiction, and The Princess Bride (as well as The Hangover, for anyone who wants to get their drink mickey’d by that movie’s legions of backwards-white-baseball-cap-wearing fans), all while serving victuals from such mobile luminaries as The Grilled Cheese Truck, Canter’s, The South Philly Experience, and Nom Nom’s.
This Saturday they’ll be showing Swingers, one of the all-time great love letters to this town, that rare movie about a flash-in-the-pan subculture that still remains funny, poignant, and truthful for years (sixteen years, oh my God) after its release. Insert “you’re so money” joke here.

Ride Nekkid
“The difference between being ‘naked’ and being ‘nekkid’ is, that when you are naked, you have no clothes on. However, when you are nekkid, you have no clothes on and you are up to something.” — Tom Robbins, “Skinny Legs and All”
This Saturday, happening in 70 cities and 20 countries across the globe, is World Naked Bike Ride day — a world-wide celebration of all things bicycle and body-image. Anyone with a bike and a willingness to go balls-out (or, y’know, whatever-out) is welcome to join. And as part of my quest to make the unsuspecting civilians of Los Angeles see things they can’t unsee, I too will be participating. Ladies, please, CALM YOURSELVES.
Is nudity mandatory? Not at all — this thing is “bare as you dare.” (Although for anyone who’s seen me with my shirt off, it’ll be more like “bear as you dare”– zing!) Everyone’s going to meet in Echo Park at 1:30 PM for a body-decorating party, with the ride leaving at 4 PM sharp. It’ll be a medium-paced 13-mile loop around the East Side, ending in a barbecue/after-party at a to-be-disclosed location. (Please say “Pat Robertson’s house”, please say “Pat Robertson’s house.”) RSVP on Facebook to get ride directions and info.
We’re gonna get a medal for this one, kids.

Welcome to the Carnevale
The Venice Beach Carnevale will not be televised. Nor will it actually be held in Venice; apparently, tonight’s hedonistic costume contest/dance-party/annual gathering of LA’s freaky people has somehow gotten too insane for the uptight streets of Venice Beach and has been moved to a secret location around Jefferson/Sepulveda. (If this were a grindhouse movie, the announcer would now solemnly intone: “It‘s a party so wild they had to move it to Culver City… where life is cheap!”)
Ok, let’s take a step back and think about this for a moment — how, exactly, does one get kicked out of Venice? Have you been there lately? You could walk around with a severed head and tourists would still ask to take pictures with you. Last time I was hanging out on the boardwalk, a guy in a leopard-print vest and bootie-shorts tried to sell me some meth, as well as (I am not making this up), a live, 5-foot python. Anyway so now I’ve got all this meth and a live python and my friends no longer like to come over. Point that I’m making here, people, it takes a lot to get your ass 86′d from Venice Beach. This event deserves your consideration.
Will there be a full-size intergalactic pirate ship known as the Space Wench to gallivant around? There will be. Will there be floor-shaking beats from the likes of Fatfinger, Todd Spero, and divaDanielle (who I’ve pimped so many times on this site, people are are going to sooner or later think I’m involved in some kind of payola scheme?) Bet your ass. Will there be a masquerade costume contest that lands somewhere between Salvador Dali and Eyes Wide Shut? Most definitely. Will there be a certain amount of public nudity? Yes ma’am. Will there be acrobats and fire performers and go-go dancers? What do you think this is, the Republican National Convention? (Ok, bad example.) Just remember to come in costume — “exotic and erotic attire encouraged.”
And if you want to get in, RSVP here today to get the address and final details for tonight.

MAKE ME A SAMMICH
For anyone who made it to the The Grilled Cheese Invitational last year, you know what you’re in for. For those of you who didn’t, SHAME ON YOU.
The GCI is more fun than playing Donkey Kong Country at Don King’s cousin’s house (for anyone who didn’t get that reference, watch this. No, really, watch it, the quotability factor is staggering.) Every year, fans of butter-crisped bread and melted cheese — in other words, all sentient humans with working taste-buds — gather for a jolly cook-off where a panel of judges, and the general public, decide who will reign as Supreme Sammich-Maker.
For those of you who want to throw on the theme from “The Karate Kid” and put your skills to the test, 300 chef-spots are given away on a first-come/first-serve basis — all you need to bring is your personalized ingredients and your A-game. I’m partial to thin-sliced sourdough with cranberry-chipotle cheddar and a sprinkling of spicy chorizo, but if I find any of you fools jacking my recipe, shit’s gonna get real. Don’t start none, won’t be none.
Seriously, though, don’t miss it (and get your tickets early) or we’ll be forced to put you in the stocks outside the courthouse and eat yummy things in front of you without offering you a bite. We cannot have anarchy.

Made in the Shade
“There’s something wrong with my ass — I need to shake it.” This was the bound-for-immortality quote my friend delivered to me as we headed out to a Shade party last summer. And if there is ever a better reason to shake your ass in a grassy park on a Saturday afternoon, I have yet to find it.
The brainchild of LA-based DJ’s DivaDanielle and Porter Tinsley, Shade is a once-a-month “day party”, kicking off this Saturday from noon til sunset in Woodley Park. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself drinking strange libations with friendly strangers on picnic blankets in the afternoon sun; where you can go ballistic with squirt-guns during impromptu water-fights; where you can try your hand at hula-hooping or spinning poi (being met with, if you’re anything like me, hilariously mixed results); where you’ll watch silk-rope acrobats slowly gyrate in the trees, like an NSFW Disney cartoon; where DJ’s you’d normally have to venture out deep into clubland (or into Burning Man) to find, are happily spinning funky house and ghetto-tech to their hearts’ content. It’s one of those things that reminds out-of-towners why they moved to LA, and reminds locals why they love it here (and for me, why I ever got into event-blogging in the first place.) It’s a secret too good to keep.
Summer’s here. Stop dilly-dallying. Go shake it.

Ditch Easter to Celebrate Songkran
Songkran, Thailand’s New Year, falls on Easter this year. If you aren’t busy filling your baskets with colorful Easter eggs, you should try to get over to Thai Town to partake in this awesome day. How cool is it that they celebrate a new year by attacking everyone with water? Water guns, water balloons, buckets of water, hoses, water, water, water. The tradition actually began quite differently. Water was poured on Buddhas to create a sort of holy water, which was then poured on the shoulders of family members to bring good fortune. Like most traditions do, it has since evolved…. into a super awesome, massive water fight! But remember, this is Thai Town, not Thailand. The water fighting won’t be as awesome as Bangkok, but that shouldn’t discourage you from helping spread the love…. and water. Whatever the case, the festival will shut down a big chunk of Hollywood Blvd. to offer food stalls, live music, dance, arts and crafts, muay Thai demos, a beauty contest, parade, and Singha beer garden. Did I mention free admittance? Take the Metro Red Line to the Hollywood Blvd./Western Ave. station to avoid the endless search for parking.

Cherry Blossom Mania
I don’t know about you, but spring is my favorite time of year. Never-mind the fact it means my birthday is right around the corner and… it sets my mind in a constant state of cupcake-dreaming bliss—springtime means the air is clean, the weather is warmer, and brightly colored petals are blooming all around, including the much-awaited cherry blossom trees. Finally getting the credit they deserve, LA is celebrating these Japanese beauties April 10th-11th in the Little Tokyo Arts District with the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
Dance the day away with some traditional Odori dancing in the street (San Pedro St., to be exact), challenge someone to a strategic-frenzy game of GO, and perfect your horse stance watching the live presentations in the Martial Arts Arena. New for this year is the J-Pop Stage, featuring anime-pop music & a lolita fashion show, a showing (4 times daily) of the film-festival favorite: Only The Brave, and (an obviously needed addition), a beer & sake garden. Food-wise, expect a large assortment of Hawaiian favorites (smoothies, please!), as well as yummy sushi and noodle selections from Japan Bistro.
This is also the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with the (too-often forgotten) Japanese American National Museum and the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, which are literally right next door.
Whatever brings you out, this vastly cultural, FREE event definitely tops the list in terms of entertainment-value. Engaging over 45,000 guests last year, there are bound to be a few recreational activities to keep you busy and out of mischief. Well…busy, at least. I’ll leave the mischief-decision up to you.

Jubilee!
Our favorite jorts-wearing, bearded acoustic folk singer/songwriter-enjoying bohemian community is back at it again, spreading joy and happiness through everything that we here at BoredLA love: music, art, community, and environment.
The Silver Lake Jubilee festival, taking place on May 22nd and 23rd, promises to unite a community once divided by the polarizing quality of Fiery Furnaces’ Blueberry Boat album for at least one weekend. It will feature a line-up of over 20 musical acts, galleries of local artists, wonderful food from local restaurants, and a slew of surprise performance acts throughout the day.
This event plans to be as eco-friendly as possible and will even feature a children’s village, eco-village, and a temporary xeriscape garden for educational purposes.
The event will happen in a few months, so keep this info in your pocket. However to pave the way for the festival, the last Wednesday of every month will feature Serenade Sunset at the El Cid (21+).

Ever Seen Chickens In Love?
OK.
So I know the pick of the week music wise was to see The Clientele (which you should all go do tonight!), but this event goes far beyond just music.
On Saturday, March 6th (tomorrow..or today I guess, depending on when you’re reading this..) you should all head over to the echoplex for “Chickens In Love: An 826LA Benefit Show“. It’s hosted by Dianna Agron from GLEE and there will be live performances by The Submarines, The Pity Party, Summer Darling, and special guest Thao Nguyen. Tickets are $15 and the event is an all day thing, going from Noon till 7PM.
Along with the music the mini-fest is gonna feature a DJ set by the Origami Vinyl dudes, punk rock hair dos from The Hive Hair Shop (interesting..), accessories for sale by local designers, the Grill ‘Em All food truck, and more. You can also place an order to purchase the Chickens In Love LP at the show.
Chickens In Love is an album/event benefiting 826LA, which is a non-profit organization which aims to help young kids write creatively and essentially want to write. (You can find out more about them here.) Basically the album is twelve songs written by students at 826 and performed by LA based bands, including She & Him and Tim and Eric. Sponsors include Origami Vinyl and FILTER magazine, so you’re sure to have a good time.
The album portion of the event also happens to be a fundraiser. From now till April 30th, head over to the online pledge site thing, and make a monetary pledge for your favorite student song. You can pledge as much as you want, as many times as you want, for as many songs as you want. The most popular song will get the 826LA Gold Record! (Wow!).
The event is pretty important, as it’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for 826LA, so come out, have a good time, listen to some music, and show your support!

Lebowski Fest Time, Dude
It’s getting close to that time of year again, duderinos.
No, I’m not talking about the long days of summer, I’m talking of course about Lebowski Fest, Southern California’s premiere celebration of All Things Dude Related.
This year’s fest takes place beginning on April 2nd at The Wiltern for The Big Lebowski Movie Party. The festival continues through the 3rd for a day of bowling at Cal Bowl.
So grab your white Russian and share your favorite quotes and more with other fans of the movie… but this isn’t Vietnam – there are rules. Tickets are a must, and they’re available online via Ticketmaster. Though you can get a 2-Day Achievers Pass, you also have the option of picking up tickets for the individual day events as well. You should probably get yours in advance, unless you want to be the only one polishing your bowling shoes outside of the lanes.

Jewlicious?
Celebrate all things Jewish this weekend at the Jewlicious Festival 6.0. Yep, ya heard. Whether you’re Jewish or not (or if you just love a potato latke or two), you can attend this celebration and meet some folks, hear some music, chow down, and I guess….get Jewlicious on yo’ ass? There are special guests (speakers, artists, presenters, etc) and it all goes down in Long Beach. FYI: Jewlicious is one of the largest Jewish sleep-overs that isn’t a sleep-away camp. Everyone brings a sleeping bag or air mattress (the event is in the Alpert Jewish Community Center). All Jewlicious-related inquiries may be answered here. Just don’t expect Matisyahu to be there (but expect many other intriguing bands).

Go For Gold
Probably the most well-known food critic, Jonathon Gold of LA Weekly, is hosting his magical Food & Wine event at the end of February. The Los Angeles Gold Standard 2010 is your one-stop shop for 40 of the most delicious LA restaurants. Included with the $60 entry fee you get to taste food from restaurants like Mozza, Jitlada, Angeli, Ludobites, Hungry Cat, Ciudad. Even low key places like Wurstkuche, Let’s Be Frank, and Kogi will be there. On top of that the wine, beer, and spirits are included. It’s not about focusing on LA’s fanciest restaurants, it’s all about the quality! With the VIP entry, you gain entry to the venue an hour before the rest of the crowd and get to leave with a special gift bag while supplies last. It’s going to be crowded but I’m assuming the venue is bigger than last year and they’ve reorganized it so less people complain and more people will be able to focus solely on the eating. Not only will you eat very well, you can meet some of your favorite chefs. Everyone in the foodie world is sure to be there, so get your tickets while they’re still available and prepare your stomach for an intense day of eating!

1st Annual LA Street Food Festival
Interested in street food but don’
t hit the streets enough? Street Food Festival is for you. Let the street vendors come to you in one convenient location so you can try all the food trucks your co-workers have bragged about and even sample a thing or two you may have seen on Bourdain. In my humble opinion, this kind of thing defeats the purpose of randomly stumbling upon something unique and delicious and to-be-eaten-with-hands, but I guess convenience is key for most fully-functional adults in the world. LA’s first street food fest is not just a food truck fest- no, no, no- there will be authentic LA street food like coconut fritters, Korean chicken wings, and everything you can imagine from a traditional taco truck, as well as vendors from LA’s Breed Street, like barbecoa and pancakes. There will also be vendors of inedible delights like UniqueLA’s pop-up mini-mart, a DIY den to make your own Valentine’s, a Valentine’s food truck themed photo booth, live entertainment, beer and wine bars (hallelujah), and a bike valet. Man, that’s one jam-packed street fest. Of course, the food trucks are the stars of the show- including The Buttermilk Truck, Grilled Cheese Truck, Sweets Truck, Fresser’s, Frysmith, Slice Truck, Flying Pig, Fishlips, many more and hopefully Coolhaus (can you tell which one is my fave?)!! So hit up those beer/wine bars heavily so that you can eat in full denial. It would make an odd Valentine’s date, but an interesting one at the very least.
*Update: Tickets are $5 at the door or presale. Maximum of 60,000 peeps can attend, so get there on time! I’m confused because some places say they are “giving away tickets” but as I far as I can tell you don’t need tickets.

It’s Time to…ID Mushrooms
I know it sounds a little strange, but Machine Project’s Fungi Fest 2010 starts on Saturday. For a week, the good folks at Machine Project will be celebrating all things mushroom-related (if you want to sound like an expert, the word is mycology). It seems like the main events are on the 16th and the 21st.
Saturday, January 16th- Meet at 8 at the Machine Project for fungus-related activities and mushroom flavored Scoops. Not sure about mushroom ice cream, but the rest sounds fun!- Monday, January 18th – Public meeting of the Los Angeles Mycological Society at the Museum of Natural History.
- Thursday, January 21st – Mushroom dance and mushroom-themed short films.
- Saturday, January 23rd – Guided mushroom walk in the morning and then harvesting and cooking mushrooms in the evening.
I honestly can’t tell whether this will be awesome or ridiculous, but it’s worth a shot for all the adventurous souls out there.

Sweet Streets: Olvera Street
I used to only associate Olvera Street with 4th grade field trips and tourists. But it’s actually a pretty sweet street. Tons of food, culture, music, history, people-watching… not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
As some of you know, LA was basically birthed on Olvera Street. Since 1781, although with some changes along the way, the street has stood the test of time. Although this place is cool, I wouldn’t say it’s a street to frequent every Saturday, but it’s definitely something you should check out if you haven’t been in a while or at all. On such a tiny street, it’s hard to imagine the plethora of shops, vendors and restaurants squeezed in here. I honestly don’t know any names of the shops, but you can find some pretty weird and tacky cliche Mexican items in each and everyone of them. A lot of the items tend to be in all the stores as well, so you can easily spot the cheapest option. I don’t know about you, but I love tacky useless items. They make great gifts or stocking-stuffers as well. It’s like what you’d find in Mexico, except a bit pricier, and even tackier.
Then there’s, to me, the stand out food stops on the street when you get sick of shopping and spending your money on luchador masks and multi-colored ponchos (Remember? Tacky cliche Mexican items?). Simple, easy, and delicious, Cielito Lindo, or ‘The Taquito Place’. Fresh and crispy filled with meat and spice, these guys are super cheap and so tasty. A couple taquitos will only set you back a few dollars. And go with the avocado sauce. Any place with avocado sauce is OK in my book. Oh and get prepared for a bit of a wait during peak hours. The line can get long, but they’re working hard back there and are able to serve everyone in a timely fashion. For dessert? Mr. Churro’s all the way.
Honestly, the name is such a turn-off, and you better be damn good at making churros if that’s going to be the title of your restaurant. Lucky for this place, their churros are pretty great. They have your regular everyday churros but for the more adventurous they’ve stuffed their churros with custards and jellies and chocolate and more. A regular churro here is $2 and a stuffed is $3. They’re big and delicious so don’t be turned off by the price because you can find cheaper churros. They probably won’t taste as good! It’s also a regular bakery with Mexican pastries and fun Dia De Los Muertos inspired sweets.
What’s great about this place is the very communal vibe. Although many are tourists, there are a lot of locals who frequent this street everyday whether it’s to hang around the plaza or catch some great authentic music. This post may seem a bit short but trust me, this street is packed with stuff to keep you entertained for hours, but it’s more about the experience versus a cool art gallery or a hip record store. It can be fun, it can be tasty, it can be interesting (if you do a history tour of the street or pueblo), hey, it might even be boring, so all you can do is go check it out and decide for yourself! No car? Don’t want to pay for parking? It is literally across the street from Union Station. So nice. Head there on February 2nd for their cool event Fiesta de la Candelaria. The festival has taken place for the last 10 years here, commemorating the “Purification of the Blessed Virgin and the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple”. There will be a procession of kinda creepy dolls dressed elaborately to depict the baby Jesus in the temple, as well as tons of candles and more. Anyway– there’s always something to check out here, that’s why Olvera Street is this week’s Sweet Street!
