Scarf Season…Sort Of

LOOMLAB_FW9012AYou may be getting ready to shop for scarves, but I bet you’ve never seen them on display like this. Daydream Republic and LOOMLAB are launching an experimental art exhibit/fashion show featuring LOOMLAB fashionista Jane Henry’s debut scarf line. The scarves will be unveiled the night of October 23rd in the form of a 3-dimensional sculpture “enrobing” the gallery. Scarves can then be tried on and purchased in an adjoining pop-up shop. This fashion exhibit of sorts will be accompanied by a music performance incorporating light, music, and design and a cash bar which will provide drinks in test tubes and beakers. Guests are encouraged to dress “radioactive ready,” whatever that means, and will leave the event with a surprise gift. Most importantly, the scarves are pretty cute.

Free Beauty Is Pain Boutique Concert

So it’s Thursday night. Perhaps you’ve had a bad week.   Maybe you have tomorrow off . Or you happen to be one of those awesome people who don’t care about what time that alarm will go off tomorrow morning, you’re going out tonight!  Well, you just happen to be in luck! Here’s a last minute concert for the best price around: FREE! Huzzah!

Tonight, Records Ad Nauseam presents a free rock/punk/electro/goth/blues show at the Beauty Is Pain boutique at Highland and Sunset in Hollywood. The set list includes The Crystelles with Gitane Demone from Christian Death, Black Church, Peg Leg Love, Tearist and Birth! (their exclamation point, not mine).

As if this montage of a line up isn’t enough, the back drop of the small loft-style boutique with walls covered in pop art paintings, neon paint, the racks of miscellaneous subculture clothing, accessories and punk records will top off the eclecticism.

Don’t like one of the bands playing? No worries, just follow the crowd spilling out into the streets to enjoy the sidewalk and the neighbor businesses of a psychic adviser, Thai restaurant, and tattoo parlor. No word if there’s going to be a costume theme tonight (the last few have been circus freak show and rockabilly), but this crowd is so random, they’re sure to accept you no matter what you wear!

Barneys for Cheap

If you’ve ever stared longingly into the windows of Barneys at the Grove and tried to justify buying that hot outfit instead of paying your rent, I’ve got some great news for you: the Barneys New York warehouse sale is coming to LA.

Admittedly, this stuff still won’t be as cheap as H&M or Forever 21, but it will be Barneys at 50-75% off…and 75% off of crazy expensive is way less expensive.  So, if you want to look chic for cheap, head over to the LA Convention Center anytime between the 13th and the 23rd.  If I were you, I’d go on the 13th so all the good stuff will still be there.  Go clothes crazy and let us know if you find anything amazing!ws_09

The Plain Gravy Bailout BBQ

thumbFlaunt magazine is having a barbecue tomorrow and whatever product they are selling, it will be 80% off and everything has to go or apparently they will be hauled off to the slammer.  Weird laws in LA, man, I’m tellin’ you.

DJs (Computer Jay & Thee Mike B) and BBQ from a wiener master on a Saturday afternoon.  That’s what SoCal is all about.  View the facebook invite for… well… pretty much the same limited info.  I’m guessing it’s clothes that they’re selling.  And maybe some art.  Oh and here’s a made up rumor, Sasha Grey will be there to do a live performance and skateboarding Demo.

Create:Fixate Moves You Until 3am

buildCreate:Fixate, an art, music, and community oriented organization has supported the careers of artists and the promotion of creative education since its humble beginnings in 2001.  What better way to celebrate local artists, musicians, and community than with a big, loud, art party?  This Saturday, check out their next epic show,“Build”, Exploring Art, Architecture, and Design.  The contributing artists, including David Phillips, Will Koffman, and a boat load of other fantastically interesting and diverse people and contributers, have constructed the “Build” show in a way that encourages activity, collaboration, and creation.  In the Optical Longue you can check out photography, sculpture, multimedia, installations and live painting. There will be video projections, artwork from Environmental Charter High School, fashion and jewelery, live action art, and a mad ton of music from djs and live performers.  They’ve even thought of the children (from 4pm-7pm) and will have a kids creative zone to promote a future full of artists (and patrons). The event features a vegetarian friendly BBQ, a full bar, and street parking (as well as a lot for $10 a car).  The cost of admission doubles after 10pm, so show up before then!

Coco De Mer & eEvil Ink Launch Party @ The Doheny

4796_1117870481226_1660947734_280315_3801093_nI’m not going to dance around this one: As a fan of the Tiffany’s of bedroom toys, Coco de Mer, when I found out about this party I was giddly hotpanted with anticipation. If you’re a typeface nerd, or love cheeky victorian-style print design, then this launch party’s for you. If you are also a little on the kinky side, and are familiar with–and only in this case is familiarity synonymous with love– Coco de Mer’s luxurious instruments of fancy, then this is also a party for you.

See fabulous brand new designs by eEvil Ink Design (I love their shirts and cards), and curious items of finery sold by Coco de Mer of Hollywood! Drink intriguing spirits & sophisticated libations at The Doheny in Downtown LA.

Oh dear, the music: KCRW’s own DAN WILCOX stylings and samplery, in addition to live music by LA’s own Stereo Fox!

Your only hitch in this plan is deciding what to wear– dresscode is cocktail/evening, so no denimed slacks, teed shirts, or gymmed shoes allowed.

A&D Monthly Vintage Sale

If you’re too poor to hit up EDC or any of the other money-intensive goings-on this weekend, than that probably also means you’re too poor to buy new clothes. Well, I don’t know if anyone has told you this, but vintage is totally in, and there is absolutely no reason why you should pay premium prices for old-ass clothes.

With consistently quality clothing, hip bands, and an open bar, and a taco truck, you really can’t go wrong.

Fancy Tea at a Fancy Place for 15 Cents (in Costumes!)

The international fancy pants hotel, The Langham afternoon-tea(Huntington Hotel and Spa), will serve tea at its original 1865 price (one shilling, then, which converts to 15 cents these days) to celebrate its anniversary.  Usually Afternoon Tea at Langham easily costs over $60 (check out the menu).  The Pasadena hotel tries to keep it royal like the first Langham in London, so we’re talking cucumber sandwiches on plates that have other plates coming out of them.  There might be a catch, like you only get certain things off the menu in the deal, but the servers are going to dress up in period costumes and the guests are invited to do the same, so the misleading promotional trick is less annoying. How exciting!  If you can’t make it then, you can still get a 25% discount on tea Thursdays and Fridays through the end of June.  I doubt there will be costumes, then, though, and 25% off royal tea is still 250% more than a commoner like me would ever dream of spending on tea.  Call for reservations (626) 568-3900.

Absurd Amount of Super Sample Sales

Modern Amusement Summer Sample SaleWowowowowowowow… This weekend is going to be an amazing one for sample sales, and, no, it’s not just the quantity… It’s the QUALITY. With sales by Steven Alan, Modern Amusement, and James Perse, you can get your California casual game on lock for up to 80% off, and just in time for summer (if the “June gloom” ever passes, that is).

If I were to recommend one, I would tip my hat to James Perse, but that’s mostly because it hasn’t begun yet, meaning early birds haven’t gotten all the good worms. If you are able to head out today, though, both of the others are worth checking out. Oh, and cash or credit only!

Carnevale! is Closer Than You Think…

carnevale1You don’t have to be in Italy to celebrate Carnevale. For the 7th year, Venice Beach will host a fabulous party that includes crazy costumes, dancing, craft booths, live music, and both a costume contest and poster contest to design next year’s ad and win $500. The organizers emphasize that this is a free event that will definitely put a smile on your face during these rough economic times. Who doesn’t love bright colors and feathers? So listen, head to a costume shop, or throw something together on your own, and head over there this weekend. If you don’t dress up, you will feel left out and very, very sad. The only real rule is no nudity. So cover up boys, no one wants to see that!

A&D Vintage Sale by the pound

brady_bunch

That's A&D sale right there, middle left.

This month I feel extra special, because not only am I cool and hip enough to even know about the A&D vintage sale this Saturday, but Deborah herself sent me an evite invitation. Well, by golly, mark me as “Attending” +infinity guests! because I can’t afford to miss this partysale. Literally. I need new clothes and am unemployed. Well, technically I’m a professional blogger, but that’s only because I don’t have another job.

Dance, drink, shop, eat. Rinse, repeat. That’s the A&D lifestyle. This unique, postmodern mixture of a sale and a party is certainly not to be missed. It’s like the sexually confused, redheaded, left-handed middle child of a Party and a Clothing Sale, who have divorced and remarried a Taco Truck and a Bar. Even if you don’t like to party, come for the cheap clothes ($4 a pound, or “quid” in Britain). And if you don’t like clothes, then come for the all-night open bar free drinks, and you’ll be sure to find yourself someone who shares your dislike of clothes, and hence can’t wait to get them off you. And if you don’t like partying or clothes, then there’s tacos. And if you don’t like any of those three things, well, take Gaga’s advice and just dance. Live bands! DJ!

I heard it was great when it was here a few months ago, so if you missed it before, don’t make the same mistake this time around.
