Bored & Hungry : Pho Cafe
Pho Cafe is every hip eastsiders go-to pho destination, and it’s been a perfect retreat these last few cold, rainy days. If you haven’t been already, I’m sure you’ve heard, and if not, well, you’re hearing now. On any given night, it’s likely to be packed with young people looking for a quick, affordable, and comforting meal. Don’t worry if there’s a wait though; they get you in and out of there quick- excellent service. The ambiance is primarily what makes it such a hipster-draw; it’s surprisingly modern and clean for the type of restaurant it is and the dishes are made without MSG, or at least that’s what the peeps on Yelp tell me. I highly recommend the lemongrass steak cold noodle bowl (pictured, around $7.50), which has really tasty steak, cold noodles, cilantro, sprouts, and two egg rolls. The spring rolls are great too, which come with delicious peanut sauce, and of course the main draw to Pho Cafe is the pho, which looks wonderful, huge, and piping hot. Vietnamese crepes are fun to share as an appetizer. As for refreshment, the homemade limeade is good if not a tad too sweet, and there’s a great selection of cheap, Vietnamese beer. Don’t be fooled by my steak-centric review; there’s a veggie/tofu option for everything. Next time you’re craving something warm and filling, head to pho cafe! They stay open till midnight, so you could make a night out of it and hit up Pho Cafe and then nearby Silverlake Lounge or come post-Echo show.
