Bored & Hungry : Lazy Ox Canteen
So technically this isn’t a review per se (though I wouldn’t call many Bored & Hungry
’s reviews anyway because I only like to tell you guys good places to eat because you’re bored and you want good food- duh!?) but I am personally anxiously awaiting my first trip to Lazy Ox Canteen so I thought I’d share why I’m so psyched about it with you. Maybe you can beat me to it? I’ve been following the newly opened gastropub-ish downtown joint for awhile; there are lots of meat-centric dishes that sound unique and divine- pork trotters, Moroccan style beef jerky, chicken livers, caramelized merguez sausage, fried quail, fried anchovies, crispy pig ears, braised beef paleron with kumquats and cream of wheat (!) and Jonathan Gold raved about the baco (a hybrid taco-sandwich thing). It wasn’t until LAist posted a review of the Ox’s oft-overlooked cheeseburger (reasonably priced at $13, including fries, and cooked with added beef lard!) that I knew I had to partake. Also, ironically, a meatless dish caught my eye- the handtorn egg pasta with a sunny-side up egg and brown butter sauce ($11). Holy shit yum! Right? It kind of irks me now that everyone has caught on and the place is becoming the “it” spot downtown. It doesn’t help that Jonathan Gold put his two cents in about the place. I like to go before that happens. Oh well. Anyway, I really can’t see this place being bad at all. Did I mention they have an extensive beer menu? So go, enjoy, and by god if I haven’t been yet I’ll be really mad at you. If by chance you have a bad experience- let us know! genara@boredla.com
