Bored & Hungry : Doughboys

lDoughboys bakery has reopened, if you haven’t heard the news, and I suggest you check it out for old times’ sake. Doughboys started receiving trouble back in the summer of 2007 (health code issues) and vowed to reopen stronger and prettier. They renovated the 3rd street location, and if the soft opening last week is any indication, their loyal fans have stuck around. The food is by no means exceptional; it’s classic diner fare served in large portions that will satiate, not awe-inspire, and the fans wouldn’t have it any other way. Think large sandwiches, sloppy joes, pizzas, muffalettas, salads, and perhaps its most notorious dish- the After-School Special, which is grilled  cheese and a large bowl of supposedly extraordinary tomato soup. To me, the brunch fare stands out- breakfast crostini, toad in a hole, creamy polenta, butterscotch pancakes, blueberry flaxseed griddlecakes, and much more. What put Doughboys on the map, however, are their desserts; Oprah-approved red velvet cake about the size of your head with lots of frosting, and the equally loved albeit lesser known Hummingbird cake. The red velvet’s on my mind. Like I said, I suggest trying Doughboys simply because it’s an LA institution that’s back in commission. Could be a fun first-date spot or a place for brunch with good friends.

As of today, rumor is that the soft opening will continue throughout the week, with official opening scheduled for the end of the week, so I’d call ahead.
