Bored & Hungry: Alcove Cafe

Alcove is my favorite place on earth. Seriously. Better than Disneyland. Except I don’t even like Disneyland. But this place is a foodie’s paradise, no joke. It’s a little on the pricey side, like Urth cafe and everything good and wonderful, but it’s worth it. It’s also worth braving the weekend yuppie crowd, but better to go on a slow or rainy weekday. Housed in a historic bungalow, the vibe is cozy, homey, and expensive, so it puts you in the mood to indulge on things like yukon gold fries and banana cream cake. So for starters, try one of their alcove elixirs; I’m obsessed with the “liquid yoga” with sparkling water, which is basically sparkling apricot iced tea and is amazing. You may have noticed that I’m a panini fan, so I tend to go with the turkey hummus melt on olive bread, which is AWESOME. The olive bread makes the sandwich (you get a choice of olive, sourdough, wheat, or other boring stuff). There’s tons of turkey, creamy hummus, and cheddar all packed into grilled bread with black olives in it. So good. I get the house salad on the side, which is more than your average side salad: it has pecans, shaved carrots, and best of all shaved aged Parmesan, and lots of it. And creamy balsamic vinaigrette. The salad is just as good as the sandwich if you can believe that. You could also get the yukon gold fries or ask for sweet potato fries, which are always worth it even if you feel sick an hour later. I’m dying to try the lobster roll (pictured) but once I get there I can never pass up the turkey hummus melt. As for dessert, you have to get some at Alcove, whether its Valentine’s candy, a cookie, a giant  mouth-watering cupcake, or a slice of the humongous, artfully crafted cakes. The aforementioned banana cream is really good; not too sweet or heavy and with coconut on the outer layer of frosting. The carrot cake looks top-notch, the black and white mousse cake looks awesome, and the Oreo layer cake looks like it would kill me but be so worth it. The slices are huge, perfect to share. That about sums up Alcove Cafe, where you’ll hopefully find me at least once a week until I die.
